How does a quartz watch manage to measure time with such extreme precision? The secret lies in a tiny, synthetic quartz crystal shaped like a tuning fork. When the button cell (battery) in the watch energizes this crystal, it begins to vibrate – at an incredibly constant frequency of exactly 32,768 times per second. An integrated microchip counts these vibrations. As soon as the number 32,768 is reached, the chip sends an electrical impulse to a tiny stepper motor. This motor then moves the gear for the second hand forward by precisely one step (one second). This electronic timing is so perfectly calibrated that factors such as gravity or the watch's position – which significantly affect mechanical watches – play no role in a quartz watch.
