The ring-chain patterns and grasping animals in the Borre style symbolize the unity and cohesion of Viking Age society, as well as the mastery of natural forces. The dense weave of the ring chains often represents infinity and protection. Disc brooches, like the one from Birka, primarily served as decorative and fastening elements for women's clothing; they were typically worn centrally on the chest or at the neck to fasten the cloak or outer garment. In Birka, they were also frequently worn as single brooches in combination with other jewelry such as beaded necklaces.
