Sparks from a firesteel reach a temperature of approximately 3,000 degrees Celsius. For successful use with damp tinder outdoors, the following tips will help: - Preparation: Look for dry material inside deadwood, under tree roots, or overhanging rocks. Resinous heartwood (fatty wood) or oily birch bark are particularly well-suited as natural "boosters."
- Technique: Pull the firesteel backward under the scraper instead of pushing the scraper forward. This allows the sparks to land more precisely and concentratedly in the tinder nest without damaging it.
- Spark Boost: First, scrape a small amount of material from the steel directly onto the tinder without creating sparks. Then, ignite this small pile with a strong, powerful stroke to generate a more intense heat source.
- Protection: Ensure the surface is dry and hold the tinder as close to the firesteel as possible. As soon as the first sparks ignite, protect the embers from the wind and gently fan them.
