This Norman shield boss was typically used on the so-called Norman shield (also known as the dragon or almond shield), which emerged in the 11th century and is known for its characteristic, downward-pointing shape. It was also used on early medieval round shields, such as those used by Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Unlike other models, this boss was traditionally permanently attached to the shield with steel rivets through pre-drilled holes, although with curved shield shapes, prior adjustment of the boss's curvature may be necessary.
