The halberd was an effective all-purpose weapon in the Late Middle Ages, combining the features of a spear, axe, and hook to be effective against both infantry and cavalry. The thrusting blade allowed for ranged thrusts, while the axe possessed tremendous penetrating power against armor, and the hook was used to unseat riders or unbalance opponents. Its primary target was the infantry, particularly Swiss Confederates and German Landsknechts, who operated in close formations and, through this tactical versatility, broke the dominance of the armored knightly armies.
