The funnel-shaped muzzle of the flintlock pistol (blunderbuss) facilitated loading, particularly on rocking ships or in moving carriages. It spread the shot load widely at close range, making it extremely effective in close combat against multiple attackers. This weapon was favored by sailors to defend against boarding attempts, by stagecoach drivers for protection against highwaymen, and by the military and police for use in confined spaces or during riots.
