Galvanic zinc plating offers economical corrosion protection, safeguarding the carbon steel rings from rust and giving the chainmail a decorative, glossy finish. This process also allows for uniform coating on complex geometries without affecting the fit of the rings. To maintain long-term protection, the chainmail should be stored in a dry place and, if not in use for extended periods, lightly treated with a lubricating oil such as Ballistol or WD-40. Since galvanized armor requires significantly less maintenance than untreated steel, the mechanical friction of the rings is often sufficient to keep the surface clean with regular wear.
