Scottish Mini-Tarp – Handmade Round Shield

This mini-targe is crafted in the style of historical Scottish Highland targes from two layers of wood joined crosswise, an early form of plywood. The front is meticulously covered in robust cowhide and adorned with hand-embossed Celtic patterns and brass nails, while the back is traditionally covered in deerskin. It also features the typical leather straps (enarmes) on the inside, allowing for authentic use as a round fist shield.

The leather straps (enarmes) on the back of the mini-targe served to securely attach it to the forearm and hand, allowing for precise guidance and control in close combat. While larger Scottish round shields were often primarily held by a central grip behind the shield boss, the enarmes on the smaller version allowed for a more direct transfer of force and kept the hand mobile for additional tasks or a more secure grip.

Historically, mini-targes within Scottish clans served primarily as symbolic objects and ceremonial gifts, often presented at births or coming of age. They were used as props in ritual dances such as Highland dancing or at festive ceilidhs, representing the martial traditions and pride of the Highlands without the burden of a full-fledged battle shield. Furthermore, they functioned as decorative status symbols, emphasizing clan affiliation and a connection to Scottish history.

The combination of robust wood and high-quality leather gives this mini targe its authentic texture. Detailed brass fittings and a central shield boss serve as decorative elements, inspired by the historic Scottish Highlands and making the shield a special collector's item.
