Which watch suits me?

What matters is the intended use, the movement and the size. For everyday wear, versatile models with a stainless steel case and 5 to 10 ATM water resistance are suitable. For occasions, flat watches with a leather strap look good; for sport, robust models with a rubber or resin strap. The case size should suit the wrist: the lugs should not extend beyond the wrist.
What is the difference between quartz and automatic watches?

Quartz watches are powered by a battery, are very accurate (usually only a few seconds' deviation per month) and need hardly any care. Automatic watches wind themselves through the movement of the wrist and do without a battery. They typically deviate by a few seconds per day, but offer visible mechanics and last for decades with regular servicing.
How do I care for my watch properly?

Clean the case and glass regularly with a soft microfibre cloth. Metal and rubber straps can be rinsed with lukewarm water if the watch is sufficiently water-resistant; leather straps should stay dry. Mechanical watches need a service roughly every five to seven years. For quartz watches, a battery change with a check of the seals is usually sufficient.

A watch often accompanies you for many years. That's why it pays to answer three questions before buying: what will I wear the watch for, which movement suits me, and which size suits my wrist? At Chronenwerk you will find watches from numerous brands, from accessible everyday models to Swiss automatic watches.

Movements at a glance

Quartz watches are precise, flat and easy to care for. Solar watches charge their energy storage with light and often go for years without a battery change. Automatic watches wind themselves through arm movement, manual-wind watches via the crown. Mechanical movements are somewhat less accurate than quartz but fascinate with their inner workings of gears, springs and balance wheel.

Material and strap

Stainless steel is robust and versatile, titanium light and skin-friendly, ceramic particularly scratch-resistant. For the strap you can choose between link bracelet, Milanese mesh, leather, textile or rubber. Thanks to quick-release spring bars, some watches can be switched to a new strap without tools.

Understanding water resistance

3 ATM protects against splashes, 5 ATM against a short bath, and from 10 ATM you can swim with the watch. For snorkelling and water sports, 20 ATM is recommended; for scuba diving, a diving watch according to ISO 6425.
