A high-quality quartz watch typically has a battery life of two to three years. However, the exact lifespan depends heavily on the watch's functions. Frequent use of the stopwatch function on a chronograph or frequent activation of the backlight on a digital watch consumes more power and drains the battery faster.

Quartz watches function using a quartz movement. A quartz oscillator generates a one-second pulse that either drives a stepper motor or an electric balance wheel in a mechanical movement, or provides the timing for an electronic circuit. The power source is usually a battery. The time is displayed using mechanical hands, an LCD, or an LED.

Quartz watches are significantly superior to mechanical watches in terms of accuracy. They are more precise and exhibit much smaller deviations.
